TekkonKinkreet

Last night i watched "Tekkon Kinkreet".
an anime film, directed by Michael Arias,
adapted from a manga series "Black and White" by Taiyō Matsumoto.

im not too too keen on anime, and havent watched enough to compare,
but i was pretty much blown away by the cinematography and the background art.
Shinji Kimura (the art director) and his staff are so gifted,
it makes me crazy in the head just trying to imagine how its all done.
its such a visual spectacle to me.
the color schemes are based on advertisements of 1950's and 1960's japan.
and has a nostalgic retro feel.

Michaels says, "I'm not sure if it's due to the printing materials or the inks they were using, but there's a very peculiar flavor to the graphic design of the '50s and '60s in Japan, and we thought that would be a nice way of evoking this era that's gone by or just lives on only in this one little town."

i went and got the ArtBook today,
since i just had to see all the images at hand.
and now, i am oh~ing and ah~ing at every page.
(250 pages of them!)
the attention to details is just exquisite!
its baffling to me, that some images these artists works on for hours and days and weeks even,
are only visible on film for a mere few seconds.
i really admire that level of dedication.

i had to scan a few here.
(though these scans dont do the book justice)

-----

Michael, when asked, "Is Treasure Town meant to be a future version of Tokyo? It seems to have some aspects of the present-day city."
~"If anything, I didn't want it to seem like a recreation of a real city. I wanted it to feel like some kind of parallel universe, like it's got futuristic elements, some sort of references to Tokyo and Osaka, but also other big Asian cities, Hong Kong certainly and Jakarta. I wanted it to certainly seem like an organic place, but something where no one's been to quite that place. "

Awesome, incredible artwork. I'm dying to see that film.

A recent anime move that got even better reviews than that film and also has pretty damn impressive artwork (though entirely different) is a film called "Paprika".

Actually, I've not actually seen this film either but an dying to get my grubby little paws on it!

Kind of reminds me of Cidade de Deus, the brazilian movie. I think it's the colours and retro feel.

I've always adored looking at the backgrounds for certain animes. They are breathtaking. So much love and ettention go into such tiny details that they are pieces of art on their own. I love these scans you've provided, thank you =)

I showed all of thos epics to my mum (she's a Japanese teacher) and she LOVED them. Much entertainment and wonder. And then of course, I had to show her your stuff and she's all trying to be arty and "Wow, she has a very pre-Raphaelite line..." and I'm giggling next to her.
So you have another convert! :P

Some of the people involved in tekkon kinkreet also worked on a book a while back called "Hipira." I think you'd probably find it pretty cute.

i saw tekkon kinkreet at the platform animation festival, here in portland, and was baffled at how intricate not only the animation is, but how delicate the story line is also. it really is a beautiful film.
